Vienna-based jazz bassist and Composer Gina Schwarz studied Jazz bass and accordion at the Vienna Conservatory and bass (popular music) at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna (Mag.art). She concluded her studies at Berklee College of Music, Boston and in New York (Buster Williams, Cecil McBee, Dennis Irvin…).
Gina Schwarz would never dream of resting on the laurels her album Jazzista (2013, Unit Records) has garnered in the international press. A huge success well beyond Vienna’s jazz scene, the record established her as a world-class bassist and band leader. But rather than falling back on the same success formula, Gina Schwarz has boldly decided against reusing the previous blueprint: her latest band project, Gina Schwarz Unit feat. Jim Black solidifies Schwarz’s reputation as a true live-cell therapy for jazz. Her upcoming album Woodclock (release date: 06/10/2016) not only evades stylistic categorization, but ignores musical conventions altogether. Moreover, it is a textbook example of the perfect fusion of apparent opposites — elaborate and free, soft and loud, contemplative and uninhibited, organic and inorganic. Gina Schwarz’s multifaceted playing melds with the unmistakable sound of New York-based drummer extraordinaire Jim Black. The result is an indivisible unity which in turn lays the pulsing foundation for a band whose inspiration, technical finesse and abundant energy proves they’re in it for the long run. Woodclock grooves, rocks, and swings like the Devil!
