A unique timbre and wonderfully complex compositions and arrangements – that’s what singer and composer Sophie Tassignon stands for. This is what she also encapsulates in her own solo project as well as with the chamber jazz quartet Azolia. With KHYAL, Sophie Tassignon is now giving us a glimpse into a musical encounter of cultures. The project stands for tolerance and acceptance of peoples from all over the world, regardless of origin or belief systems. The music makes it possible to experience the beauty and artistry that can arise from cross-cultural collaboration.
A musician through and through, Tassignon has a deep interest in cultures from all over the world and is fluent in six languages. Her work with Syrian refugees in Berlin in 2016 led her to start learning the Arabic language and to seek a deeper understanding of Arabic culture. This work is now leading to the birth of her latest project KHYAL. KHYAL, which comes from the Arabic word for “imagination,” can be translated as “memory and longing for something long past.”
In KHYAL, poetic Arabic lyrics are mixed with jazz traditions from Europe and North America. The group, consisting of six international musicians based in Berlin, performs, among others, musical settings of the words of Mohammad Mallak. Mallak, a Syrian screenwriter and playwright, lives in Germany and France and serves as editor-in-chief of the magazine Saiedet Souria. Other lyrics are by Sophie Tassignon and translated from English into Arabic by Hicham Nasr.
